Western Jeju Attractions : chagwido island
Introduction
Chagwido Island comprises of three islets, Daeseom, Jisileeseom and Wado, and rocks such as Janggunyeo, Sseokeunyeo and Ganchulam, which rise above the water. According to a legend, an order to block 13 Hyeols (places of good spirit in geomancy) on Jeju Island was given to a man named Hojongdan during the Song Dynasty in China. He went to Jijangsaemi in Seoheung-ri, Seogwipo, but failed to complete his mission. On his return voyage, a nimble hawk suddenly turned into a storm and sank the ship that Hojongdan was aboard. The name Chagwido, meaning “Cannot go back” was given from the belief that the mountain god of Hallasan Mountain was angry and stopped Hojongdan from returning home. Jukdo, the main islet of Chagwido, is the largest uninhabited island of Jeju. Nevertheless, many people visit because there of its fame as a good fishing place. You can enjoy a beautiful sunset from the port or ride the submarine Venus for undersea travel in Chagwido. The Nature Reserve of Chagwido, which includes Chagwido, Jukdo and Wado, is highly ecologically valuable, as a lot of subtropical animals and plant inhabit there.
