Jejusi Attractions : hangpaduri fortress
Introduction
The Sambyolch'o Army, the crack force of the Koryo Kingdom (918-1392), continued to resist Mongol invaders even after the Koryo royal court made its peace and returned from Kangwha-do to the capital in Kaesong (where it had taken refuge in 1270). In 1273, the Sambyolch'o Army made its last resistance, fighting to the last man from Hangpadu-ri Fortress. Determined to resist the invaders, the Sambyolch'o Army first set up its headquarters on Chin-do (off the southwest coast).
Ccju033When they were driven off the island, they moved to Cheju-do and built Hangpadu-ri Fortress. The armed resistance against the Mongol invaders helps Koreans to correctly learn the lessons of history. Between 1977 and 1978, the Korean government restored part of the patriotism of the Sambyolch'o Army who had died for the home defense. The area was designated Historic Site #396.
