Introduction
Oedolgae is a rock standing out in the sea and was named for its loneliness. There are various legends about the 20-meter-high rock, for its shape changes according to the direction from which one sees it. It is also called Grandmother Rock (Halmangbawi) as one legend has it that an old woman waited for her husband to return from a fishing trip and, when he did not come back due to a storm, she became a rock. There is a rock right under Oedolgae that looks as if it is floating and it is said that her husband also turned to a rock when the grandmother became a stone pillar. In reality, the rock island was formed when a volcano erupted 1.5 million years ago. Visitors can see Hallasan Mountain, Munseom Island and Beomseom Island, which both have famous scuba diving spots, and haenyeo (women divers). In Oedolgae, a road is both a walking trail and a park. It is such a charming place that the poet Lee Saeng-Jin, who became an honorary citizen of Seogwipo for his collection of poems, “Longing for Seongsanpo,”wrote a number of poems about Oedolgae. ◈Related Information Oedolgae was created by volcanic eruption 1.5 million years ago. It is called "sea stack" in academic terms because it was formed by continual wave erosion. Natural Protection Area of Museom Island and Beomseom Island was designated as National Monument No. 421 in July 2000.
