Eastern Jeju Attractions : haenyeo museum
Introduction
A haenyeo is a woman diver who gathers marine products for a living, and Jeju is home to the largest number of them in Korea. The women, who are also called jomnyeo, jomsu, or jamsu have received a considerable amount of attention around the globe.
The haenyeo symbolize Jeju women - with their unyielding spirit they played a leading role in boosting the Jeju economy by working all over the country, and even in Japan.
They figure prominently in the history of Jeju people - Lee Gun’s Jejupungtogi (1629), Lee Ik-tae’s Jiyeonglok (1695), and Kim Chun-taeck’s Bukheongeosajib (1670) all mention haenyeo as jamnyeo. The word haenyeo appears in Wui Baek-kyu’s Jonjaejeonseo (1791).
They are most well-known for something else, though. In order to preserve the rights of Koreans, Jeju haenyeo organized a massive anti-Japanese movement in 1932 in response to Japanese exploitation of the country. We established this museum on the site where that movement was begun, and we hope to preserve and pass on the globally-recognized haenyeo culture to future generations and develop the museum into a center for culture and arts.
