Jungmun Attractions : yakcheonsa temple
Introduction
Recently refurbished, Yakch'eon (yak means medicine, ch'eon means stream) Temple is a striking contract to other temples that have fallen into disrepair. The paintings covering the buildings demostrate how a temple should look in all its splendor. The temple complex covers over 37,000 p'yong (1 p'yong=3.3 sq. meters) on land overlooking the ocean.
The front of the complex has two towers, one in each corner. The left-side one (looking from the sea) holds a giant drum. The right-side one holds a giant bell.
The main prayer hall stands 28 meters high, roughly 8 stories for regular buildings, reputed to be the largest Buddhist prayer hall in Asia. Divided into 4 floors, all are open to the public. Go upstairs for a closer look at the intricate drawings and carvings adoring the walls and ceilings.
